How to Verify an NFT Collection Before You Buy

This one check catches most impersonation. Collection names, images and descriptions cost nothing to copy — a fake can be visually identical to the real thing within minutes.

The contract address cannot be copied. Get it from the project's own site or its official social account, then confirm it matches the address on the page you are buying from. Never take an address from a chat message or a reply.

On the explorer, a verified contract shows its source code. That is what lets you — or anyone — read what it actually does.

Look for a mint function that can be called after the sale ends, an owner who can change metadata at will, or transfer restrictions. None of these is automatically bad; all of them are things you would rather know beforehand.

The holder list tells you who can move the floor. A collection where one wallet holds a large share of supply is one where that wallet's decisions matter more than yours.

Discount the obvious: the contract itself, the marketplace escrow, burn addresses. What is left is the real distribution.

A floor price with no volume behind it is a number, not a market. Look at whether trades are actually happening, and between how many distinct wallets. A handful of addresses trading with each other produces a chart and no liquidity.

The activity feed shows real sales across the chain as they happen.

Look for a team that has shipped before, a roadmap with dates that have already been met rather than promised, and communication that survives a bad week.

Then be honest about the limits. None of these checks makes a collection a good investment, and none of them can rule out a team that changes its mind later. They rule out the cheap fakes, which is most of the risk and not all of it.
